The recently released Wonder Woman film may just be the biggest cinematic surprise of this year. With abysmal reviews for films like Suicide Squad and Batman Vs Superman stinging the DC brand – it’s no wonder many expected the film starring Gal Gadot to flop. But on the contrary, 2017’s Wonder Woman has propelled the heroine to new glorious heights. Yes, the spotlight is firmly on DC’s brightest star – a star whose comic books are rich with incredible facts. Here are five of our favourites:
#1 She has picked up Thor’s Hammer
You may remember a certain scene involving Thor’s hammer from Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. In this scene, the heroes are celebrating a victory – and they start to compete to see who can lift the mighty Mjolnir aka Thor’s hammer. Captain America, Iron Man… all of them fail. Well, if Wonder Woman was there, she would have definitely shown them a thing or two – she actually lifted the hammer during a DC and Marvel crossover special in 1996!
#2 Wonder Woman only appeared in one film before 2017’s blockbuster
She’s starred in board games, in her own TV series, video games and even a casino game… but Wonder Woman has only starred in one movie prior to 2017. It was during the 2014 Lego Movie that Wonder Woman made her debut on the silver screen – and it wasn’t even that big a part. Judging by the success of the new movie – we’re sure Miss Diana Price will be seeing plenty of Hollywood in years to come…
#3 Wonder Woman has a murderous streak
Now we’re not saying she’s some kind of mass murderer or potential stand in for the Punisher, but Wonder Woman is not afraid to exact fatal judgement on those who stand in her way. In fact, she has dispatched 15 adversaries – including Batman in an alternate timeline. Well, what did we expect? She’s an Amazonian warrior and the Goddess of War after all.
#4 She’s been banned… for being underdressed
In 1942, the National Organization for Decent Literature banned Wonder Woman’s book Sensation Comics with little warning. A slightly confused publisher wrote to the bishop in charge of the organisation to understand why the book had been banned. And the bishop promptly answered that Wonder Woman didn’t have enough clothes on. We’re pretty sure this bishop would have been outraged if he saw the 1980s Wonder Woman TV series.
#5 She had a thing with Superman
The man of steel hasn’t always been involved with Lois Lane. In 2012, Wonder Woman and Krypton’s finest started getting romantically involved. However, the romance was doomed to failure – and the short lived fling was also bashed by critics and fans. Perhaps it was for the best – could you imagine a domestic involving these two? We’re pretty sure Metropolis would know all about it.
