Benioff and Weiss look to the stars for their latest series.
Since the end of Game of Thrones, we’ve been waiting to see what showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would do next.
For a time, the pair were attached to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films, as well as being linked to other projects. However, in 2019 they inked a multi-year film and television deal with Netflix. 3 Body Problem is the first fruit of that union.
At the recent Tudum Global Fan Event in Sao Paulo, cast members Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Alex Sharp, Jovan Adepo and John Bradley appeared to shared the show’s first teaser trailer.
The series is based the critically acclaimed books of author Liu Cixin. Billed as a mystery-thriller, it tells the story of what happens when humanity discovers we are not alone in the universe.
Here’s the Netflix show synopsis for 3 Body Problem:
A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
The cast includes former GoT cast members John Bradley, Liam Cunningham and Jonathan Pryce, and Marvel stars Benedict Wong and Tsai Chin. Also in the ensemble are Jovan Adepo, Rosalind Chao, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Ben Schnetzer, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng and Saamer Usmani.
Benioff and Weiss have co-created the show with Alexander Woo (True Blood). The director is Derek Tsang, who also co-produces.
3 Body Problem lands on Netflix with 8 episodes in January 2024. We’ll keep you posted.
