Not content with reviving Biker Mice from Mars, Ryan Reynolds is employing an alien from further afield: ALF.
Thanks to Deadline, we’ve learned that another classic from our childhood is getting a relaunch (of sorts). ALF, short for Alien Life Form but better known as Gordon Shumway, has now landed himself a surprising new career in advertising.
The popular 80s sitcom character, a wise-cracking alien from the planet Melmac who crash-landed in a garage and ended up staying with a human family, will be fronting advertorial segments on the Maximum Effort Channel.
The ads will endorse products such as mobile phones and video doorbells during episodes of an ALF marathon. They premiere on Maximum Effort this Saturday, 29th July in the channel’s first series of “Maximum Moments”. Here’s a taste:
ALF was created by Paul Fusco, who both voices and performs the character.
Ryan Reynolds says:
“At Maximum Effort, we love taking risks and blurring the lines between shows and sponsorship because we believe both can be equally entertaining.
Besides my irrational love of ALF growing up, one of the reasons we licensed this show was precisely because Paul, Shout! Studios and our intrepid brand partners wanted to plot with us to bring ALF back to life. Tune in this Caturday!”
The “Caturday” reference? The aliens of Melmac had a hilarious predilection for eating felines, of course.
Whether this mini-revival leads to more for the character remains to be seen. We’ll keep you posted.
