Benedict Cumberbatch has been chatting about the decision to cast Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor…
Benedict Cumberbatch is heading back to BBC One this weekend with the adaptation of the book The Child In Time. He’s starring in and has produced the 90 minute drama, that co-stars Kelly MacDonald.
He’s thus been promoting the programme, and that includes an interview with BBC Online where the casting of Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who came up. Count Cumberbatch amongst those thrilled with the decision to offer her the role of the Time Lord.
“It’s an alien – why can’t it be a woman?”, he said of the role. “Why can’t it be any gender? I think she’s an extraordinary actress and we’re lucky culturally to have got her to agree to do it. Just go for it – let’s see what happens”.
Cumberbatch also joked that he’d be up for seeing a female Sherlock. “Why not?”, he said. “Sherlockina – it’s coming to you soon!”.
The Child In Time screens on September 24th at 9pm.
