Citadel - Richard Madden & Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Citadel – a shaky future for the international franchise?

Posted Filed under

The prospects for Prime Video’s pricey international Citadel spyverse may be in doubt, or about to be trumped by another famous spy, according to reports.

Citadel launched in 2023 with an eponymously titled first season.

Fronted by Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, as amnesiac former secret agents (and lovers), the show was recommissioned before it had even aired. Citadel‘s producers are Joe and Anthony Russo, who MGM Amazon signed up off the back of their Marvel Cinematic Universe successes.

The franchise was planned as an international one, and two spin-off shows have since emerged.

The 2030 set Italian Citadel: Diana starred Matilda De Angelis, trapped undercover inside Manticore as a double-agent.

Meanwhile, the Indian Citadel: Honey Bunny played out in both 1990 and 2000. It told the story of a spy couple, played by Varun Dhawan and Samantha, and their daughter.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision reports that the main show’s second run is being pushed back. Originally slated for late 2025, it’s now not likey to land until spring 2026 with work on other spin-offs halted. It’s suggested that Amazon MGM are not happy with what they’ve seen of season 2 so far.

Bond

Another reason suggested is the recent shift in control of the James Bond franchise. With long-term producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson ceding creative control, 007’s universe is now fully under Amazon’s direction. Consequently, as well as a new big screen outing, we’re expecting spin-off streaming series to follow.

Additionally, Citadel was the brainchild of Jennifer Salke, who has just left her role as the Head of Amazon MGM studios.

We’ll keep you posted on Citadel – and you can find all of the Spyverse so far on Prime Video.
