The series stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as a pair of amnesiac agents.
Updated 15/03/23: Citadel scores a second run before the first has aired.
With the show’s launch still a month and a half away, THR are reporting that Amazon have already renewed their spy thriller Citadel for a second season.
The show is an important franchise for the streamer; Indian, Italian and Mexican spin-offs are already in the works. However, it has enjoyed a troubled genesis, with original showrunner Josh Applebaum and director Brian Kirk exiting the project. Extensive reshoots took place under new showrunner David Weil (Hunters), adding a further $75 million to the already impressive $160 million budget.
David Weil is expected to stay in place for season 2, with the Russo Brothers returning to direct multiple episodes.
Citadel launches on Friday April 28th, 2023 with a double episode drop.
Updated 13/03/23: At the SXSW Expo, Amazon Studios debuted a further scene from Citadel
At this weekend’s SXSW, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios, have revealed more from Citadel. In a lively conservation, they discussed the next generation of women in Hollywood, global content innovation, and Chopra Jonas’ role in the show.
The clip sees Nadia Sinh come face to face with proof of her forgotten past as a spy…
Remarkably, despite her global fame, Citadel is the first project in which Priyanka Chopra Jonas has enjoyed pay parity with her male co-star. As quoted in The Hollywood Reporter, she said:
“I’m laughing about this, but it’s kind of nuts. I put in the same amount of investment and work, but I get paid much less. But the ease in which Amazon Studios said, ‘That’s what you deserve, you are co-leads, that’s just fair,’ and I was like, ‘You’re right, it’s fair.’ And I wonder: Did that happen because there are very few female decision-makers in Hollywood? Would that have been a different conversation if a woman didn’t make that decision? Those are not conversations that happened very easily.”
The show comes to Prime Video with a double episode premiere on Friday April 28th, 2023.

Citadel – trailer for the Russo Brothers’ international spy-fi thriller
Ahead of its April release, Prime Video have dropped the trailer for Citadel.
The story follows the handsome pair of Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as former secret agents; the pair have forgotten their shared past working for a clandestine international global spy agency.
Coming from Anthony and Joe Russo (Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame), Citadel has had a lengthy gestation with a reported budget of over $250 million. Despite that, it looks like heaps slick, high-octane fun!
Here’s the premise for Citadel:
Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.

The show comes from Amazon Studios and the Russo Brothers’ AGBO. The showrunner and executive producer is David Weil, alongside Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg for Midnight Radio. Newton Thomas Sigel and Patrick Moran also serve as executive producers.
Citadel comes to Prime Video with a double episode premiere on Friday April 28th, 2023. Subsequent episodes follow weekly.
