Oliver Postgate’s celebrated original scripts promise to reveal what the Clangers were actually saying!
At this time of year, the team at CultBox towers are often on the lookout for present ideas. Fans can be a tough bunch to buy for, but if you’ve a friend of relative of a certain age, the promise of supporting Clangers: The Complete Scripts 1961 – 1974 might be just the ticket.
Described as “the ultimate gift for Clangers fans” the book contains all 27 of Oliver Postgate’s scripts for the much-loved 1970s television show. Postgate created a host of children’s favourites which charmed a generation of children (and their parents). His other hits included Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog and the ever-popular Bagpuss. This book has been edited by his son Dan Postgate, who was also involved in the 2015 Cbeebies continuation of the show.
What’s particularly fascinating is that, although the Clangers communicated through a musical language, the scripts contained actual words. Thus, the book promises to bring “… these tiny characters to life in a way that’s never been seen before.”
Not just the scripts
In addition to the scripts, the book also promises a list of additional treats including Oliver Postgate’s special musical notation for each episode. There’s also Peter Firmin’s illustrations from the original ‘bible’ for the show plus his character sketches. Additionally, there are photos of other ephemra, including the memorable swanee whistle, and the knitting patterns for the original clangers too.
