Colin Baker will guest in Emmerdale later this month, following in the footsteps of other Doctor Who alumni
There’s a new cameo role for actor Colin Baker (The Brothers, Doctor Who, I’m A Celebrity, Celebrity Come Dine With Me) when he appears in Emmerdale later in September.
Baker is far from the first former Doctor Who actor to appear in the long-running soap. Frazer Hines (who played the second Doctor’s companion Jamie) played Joe Sugden between 1972 and 1994, and more recent companion Jenna Coleman (who played Clara) was in the soap as Jasmine Thomas between 2005 and 2009. While we’re collecting the answers to future sci-fi soap trivia questions, Joe Sugden’s wife Kate Sugden was played by Sally Knyvette (aka Jenna Stannis in Blake’s 7). Colin Baker also appeared in Blake’s 7 in one episode.
Meanwhile, back to later this month, we learn Baker’s character is a potential new love interest for Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen). Diane sets up a date with Colin’s character Michael at the Woolpack, but she’s caught off guard by what soap bosses are calling his “strange passion”. We assume that doesn’t include multi-coloured coats.
Speaking of the part, Baker said:
“…To get a call to join the cast, albeit briefly, as a possible love interest for Elizabeth Estensen, an actress I had long admired, certainly appealed to me. A bonus was the fact that also in my scenes was Rodney Blackstock, played by my old friend Patrick Mower.
“I enjoyed my COVID compliant time with both of them in Leeds inordinately. As to what happened, well you’ll just have to watch and find out. It’s a bit of a puzzle actually!”
