Dead to Me boss cites Fleabag as inspiration for season 3 decision

The series is one of Netflix’s most popular, but it will burn out not fade away…

It was quite the surprise earlier this year when Netflix announced that its extremely popular comedy drama series Dead to Me would only come back for one more season.

Season 3 of the series will see stars Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini return to finish the story of Jen and Judy’s tumultuous friendship. At the end of season 2, fans were left on a cliffhanger as the body of Judy’s ex, Steve, whom Jen had killed in a rage, was discovered just as his twin brother hit their car in a drunken haze.

“I always had the sense that I wanted this show to be a relatively short-running one,” Dead to Me creator Liz Feldman told THR. “I understand the landscape at Netflix. It’s very rare for them to have a show that goes five, six or seven seasons. It can happen, but it’s obviously the exception. Halfway through shooting season two, an idea came to me that felt very true to the show — and I realised that it could be a really great way to end it.”

Feldman added “It does sort of launch from the end of season two and that cliffhanger. A lot of it is intuitional. I follow my gut with these things. Also, I was inspired by [Fleabag creator] Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She just decided that two seasons of her wonderful show was enough. I think that’s an incredibly self-controlled way to deal with success. Sometimes I think I’m making a mistake, letting go of this incredible alchemy we have with Christina and Linda, but it just feels right to me that this is how we should close out the story.”

Season 3 has not yet begun filming, and there’s been no release date set.
