Disney+ fails to stream Doctor Who spin-off when anticipated

The War Between the Land and the Sea has failed to appear on the Disney+ schedule for April, missing the expectation that the Doctor Who spin-off would be available on the streamer in early 2026.

While Disney never shared its streaming date for the series, a BBC press release stated that The War Between the Land and the Sea would stream on Disney+ in “early 2026.”

In the UK, the series transmitted on BBC One in December 2025 and remains available to view on BBC iPlayer.

April marks the end of the first third of the year. If the series were to stream on Disney+ in May 2026, streaming at the tail end of the first half of the year would hardly qualify as “early.” Anything after April qualifies as mid to late 2026.

CultBox has reached out to Disney to inquire why The War Between the Land and the Sea has not yet been made available on their streaming service.

A 26-episode co-production deal between Disney and the BBC allowed fans outside the UK to enjoy two series and five specials of the spin-off’s parent series Doctor Who simultaneous to UK transmission. The deal having concluded without renewal prior to the completion of the 5-episode spin-off, it’s unclear when, or indeed whether, The War Between the Land and the Sea will stream on Disney+.

The premise of the spin-off covers how UNIT (Unified Intelligence Taskforce) copes when the Doctor isn’t around. Aquakind, a fearsome ancient race formerly known as the Sea Devils, have been slumbering beneath the sea and waken to see the polluted state of the oceans. Emerging from the waters all around the world, they dramatically reveal themselves and commence war on humankind. An international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war on an epic scale.

The spin-off consists of five episodes written by Russell T Davies and Pete McTighe and directed by Dylan Holmes Williams; Homo Aqua, Plastic Apocalypse, The Deep, The Witch of the Waterfall and The End of the War.

Fans outside the UK who wish to watch the The War Between the Land and the Sea have the option of purchasing the DVD or Blu-ray from outlets in the UK. A Blu-ray player with the ability to play discs in the Region B format is required.
