Once and Future 2 – ‘The Artist at the End of Time’ promises a multi-Doctor tale with a twist.
Updated 14/06/22: Once and Future: ‘The Artist at the End of Time’ lands today.
To celebrate the release of the second instalment of Once and Future, the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary audio series, audio producers Big Finish have provided a haunting video promo with a neat visual reference to ‘The Five Doctors’.
The story, which brings together the degenerating Doctor (stabilised as the Fifth) with his future daughter Jenny, also introduces him to The Curator. The future, retired version of the Time Lord who began on screen in ‘The Day of the Doctor’, is played here by Sixth Doctor star Colin Baker – a role he took on during the Eighth Doctor’s Stranded storyline.
We now also know the full cast list, with Abi Harris playing the Roboguide, John Telfer and Toom, and Messrs Baker (Colin), Noonan, McCoy, Treloar and Troughton (Michael) as their respective Doctors.
We look forward to bringing you our CultBox review in due course.

Doctor Who – Once and Future 2 cover and cast revealed
Once and Future, the epic Doctor Who 60th Anniversary series kicks off in May. The story sees the Doctor injured during the Time War and stuck in a state of degeneration.
The first release, ‘Past Times’, sees Tom Baker’s incarnation take the lead. The story reunites him with Sarah Jane Smith and his modern UNIT allies and dealing with the Meddling Monk.
Now, audio producers Big Finish have now confirmed details of the second release too.
Here’s the synopsis for ‘The Artist at the End of Time’:
Suffering the effects of degeneration, the Doctor heads towards the end of the universe in search of answers. Instead, he finds his daughter – Jenny – and an Artist whose works appear to mark the end of every world they touch.
The Doctor stabilises into his Fifth form to join forces with Jenny and the Curator to solve the mystery of the Final Gallery and the art it has collected.
It’s not the first encounter for the Fifth Doctor and Jenny, the Doctor’s Daughter, as the pair met for The Legacy of Time. The Curator appears here in Colin Baker form, as adopted the final volume of Stranded, part of The Eighth Doctor Adventures. That makes it a multi-Doctor adventure of sorts, even if the Doctor himself doesn’t realise it!
A family reunion
Speaking about the story, star Georgia Tennant (Peter Davison’s real-life daughter) said:
“I feel like I’m always working with Dad. It’s so nice to see a different side to him – he’s very impressive to watch. Also, I’ve known Colin since I was very small, so it was a little like being a kid back in the 1980s again. They haven’t changed and their rapport is pretty special. It was fun to try and find my space in that.”
Producer David Richardson added:
“[writer] James Goss is a master at painting on a broad, sweeping canvas while telling intimate stories that strike to the very heart of the characters. This is no exception and the characters here are none other than the Doctor (now reverted to his Fifth incarnation), his daughter Jenny and the enigmatic Curator. It’s an intoxicating mix to mark the second instalment of this 60th-anniversary celebration.”
Doctor Who: Once and Future – The Artist at the End of Time is released in June 2023. It’s available to pre-order on standard Collector’s Edition CD + download, or digital download only from Big Finish.
