Doctor Who spin-off actress teases “love story”

When asked by ScreenRant what she can tease about her character, Salt in the Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land an the Sea, actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw mentioned a romantic element.

“My character’s called Salt. She’s an amphibian, and she also has a very regal presence. I think Russell T. Davies is such a clever writer, and I think that there are so many layers to the story. There’s a love story, and there’s the whole ‘two worlds’ aspect.”

From watching to trailer for the spin-off, it would appear that Salt and human character named Barlcay (Russell Tovey) become close while working together to make peace between humans and an ocean-dwelling species called Sea Devils.

The premise of the spin-off covers how UNIT (Unified Intelligence Taskforce) copes when the Doctor isn’t around. The Sea Devils, a fearsome ancient race that have been slumbering beneath the oceans, wake up to see the polluted state of the oceans. Emerging from the sea, they dramatically reveal themselves and commence war on humankind. An international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war on an epic scale.

“I’ve only seen little bits of it; I haven’t even seen the whole thing myself. So, I’m just as excited as the fans to watch it,” Mbatha-Raw added.

Written by Russell T Davies and Pete McTighe and directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, The War Between the Land and the Sea will transmit on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and exclusively on Disney+ outside of the UK (where available) some time in 2026.
