Steven Moffat admits that he’s known that the 13th Doctor would be played by a woman for some time….
If you’re wondering if Doctor Who series 10 was deliberately making a nudge or two about the Doctor’s gender, then Steven Moffat might just have given you the answer.
He’s been at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, on Doctor Who promotional duties. And whilst there, he’s admitted that “I’ve known for the entire series I’ve been working on that the next Doctor was going to be a woman”.
He did add too that “I didn’t know that it would be Jodie. I didn’t know that until the Friday before the announcement. I didn’t want to know until Peter knew. That was my rule”.
Jodie Whittaker was duly announced in the role of the Doctor the weekend before last, and since then, she’s believed to have filmed her first proper scene for Doctor Who.
As part of the Comic-Con panel, Moffat also added that “it makes absolutely no difference. It’s a pronoun. This man/woman doesn’t have any masculine qualities and probably won’t have any feminine qualities, either. He’s an alien in the form of a human male, now an alien in the form of a human female and that’s it”.
Jodie Whittaker will make her debut in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, Twice Upon A Time. The same episode that’ll see Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat depart the show…
