Audio producers Big Finish celebrate the day with a surprise audio release – Captain Scarlet: Martian Menace.

As any good Anderson fan knows, today (10th July) is Captain Scarlet‘s birthday. In order to celebrate the indestructible Spectrum agent’s special day, audio producers Big Finish are releasing an adaptation of one of his TV21 comic strip adventures.

Captain Scarlet: Martian Menace sees our hero venture back to the Mysteron city on Mars, a place laden with fond memories for fans from the original television series of 1967.

The Mysterons… Sworn enemies of Earth… Possessing the ability to recreate an exact likeness of an object or person… But first, they must destroy… Leading the fight, one man fate has made indestructible… His name; Captain Scarlet.

After Captain Scarlet thwarts an attack on a Spectrum production plant, the Mysterons announce their intention to destroy humanity’s first city on Mars and Colonel White is kidnapped! Is his abduction part of the latest Mysteron scheme, or is he held captive by a more human force?

With the fate of the world at stake, Captains Scarlet and Ochre must travel to the Mysteron city on Mars but will they be in time to prevent disaster?

Based on the original TV21 comic strip story, issues 164166.

Chris Dale, who has adapted and produced the tale said:

“This has always been one of my favorite Captain Scarlet stories. The scale is grand and epic. There’s so much at stake. It’s been great to take this favorite story of mine from childhood and expand on and explore the narrative to create this very special audiobook.”

We’re told the 75-minute production not only pays homage to the original comic strip, but also expands the narrative too. There’s more time for guest character and settings, plus nods to other Anderson series, notably Thunderbirds and Fireball XL5,  preserved from the original 1960s strip.

For the inside scoop on why July 10th is such an important date, there’s a great explainer at GerryAnderson.com too.

Captain Scarlet: Martian Menace is available to download from Big Finish now.

Pre-orders for a special CD version are also available through the Gerry Anderson Store.
