Sightseers and Free Fire director Ben Wheatley’s next comedy film, Happy New Year, Colin Burstead, is set to air on the BBC this winter after its premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
Happy New Year, Colin Burstead sees Humans star Neil Maskell take the titular role as a man who rents out a country manor for his extended family one festive season, only to have his estranged brother, David (played by Sam Riley) turn up unexpectedly.
The mighty cast consists of Maskell, Riley, Peaky Blinders‘ Joe Cole, Game of Thrones‘ Charles Dance, I, Daniel Blake‘s Hayley Squires as well as Richard Glover, Bill Paterson, Peter Ferdinando, Mark Monero, Asim Chaudhry, Alexandra Maria Lara, Doon Mackichan, and Sinead Matthews.
Wheatley’s new film will have an unusual release – debuting first at next month’s BFI London Film Festival and then screening around the UK with Q&As with Wheatley and the cast. Happy New Year, Colin Burstead will then air on BBC Two around the new year before being uploaded to BBC iPlayer for a full year.
To top it all off, Wheatley is developing a TV series with the same characters for broadcast sometime in the future.
Head of BBC Films, Rose Garnett had this to say about the film: “When Andy [Starke, producer] and Ben showed Happy New Year, Colin Burstead to me and Shane Allen [controller of BBC Comedy] we both fell for it. Funny, acute and very human, it’s a film about families at their worst and best, and a perfect bit of alternative Christmas television. We love that its home is the BBC.”
We’ll pass on more news about Happy New Year, Colin Burstead as we get it.
