Annihilation director announces tech-themed TV drama

Fresh from the release of his mind-bending sci-fi film Annihilation (find it on Netflix now!), English writer/director/producer Alex Garland has lined up a new project. The FX network has ordered a pilot episode for Devs, a tech-based drama that Garland wrote and intends to direct. This is Garland’s first TV project.

Deadline broke the news, sharing this short synopsis: “[In Devs,] a young computer engineer, Lily, investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend.”

Garland, of course, is no stranger to technological terrors. His first film as director, Ex Machina, featured a power struggle between tech CEO (Oscar Isaac) and an artificially intelligent robot of his own creation (Alicia Vikander). It’ll be interesting to see if similar themes pop up in Devs.

FX exec Eric Schrier describes Devs as a “captivating series from Alex Garland, building on his track record of groundbreaking work that challenges our notion of humanity amid the seemingly boundless promise of technology”.

Garland will reteam with his producing partners from DNA TV and Scott Rudin Productions to produce the pilot episode for Devs. Here’s hoping that all goes well, and we can feast our eyes on a full season at some point in the not too distant future.

We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
