The CW has formally announced that it is giving Ruby Rose a Batwoman pilot episode, following on from her introduction as the character in the Elseworlds Arrowverse crossover event late last year.
Fans may have assumed, since Ruby Rose showed up in the crossover as a version of Batwoman whose world already seemed fairly fleshed out, that a solo series for the character was already a sure thing. However, now it seems that it was less of a done deal at that stage.
Only now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has The CW decided to order a pilot episode. Once the pilot is made, the decision on whether or not to make a full stack of episodes will follow.
Caroline Dries (formerly of The Vampire Diaries) has penned the pilot and will serve as showrunner if the series goes ahead. David Nutter (who’s shot episodes of Game Of Thrones, Arrow and The Flash) is set to direct the pilot. Greg Berlanti, as ever, is set to executive producer.
THR also shared this synopsis for the potential season:
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane [Rose] soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
