Doctor Who star Alex Kingston has revealed that she believes “the Doctor has to be a guy.”

The Arrow actress returned as River Song last week in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, ‘The Husbands of River Song’.

Discussing the possibility of a female Doctor, Kingston told The Guardian: “It’s difficult, I don’t know quite why, but I would imagine, if anything, the Doctor might be of a different race than a different gender. I can’t imagine, myself, the Doctor being a different gender. I just think that too many men have played that role [already].”

She added: “Essentially, if one goes back historically, really it’s been a little boys’ show, and girls have been brought on to it. Certainly, when I was a girl I loved it as well. But I just feel – I hope that women aren’t going to hate me for this – the Doctor has to be a guy, actually. I do. Although it would be very interesting for River if it were a woman!”

Doctor Who River Song Day of the Moon

Current showrunner Steven Moffat commented last year: “It will not happen that somebody sits down and says we must turn the Doctor into a woman … A person will pop into the showrunner’s head and they’ll think. ‘Oh my God, what if it was that person?’ And when that person is a woman, that’s the day it will happen.”
