We’re indebted to the BBC Archive today, for drawing our attention to the fact that on this day 31 years ago, Sylvester McCoy was unveiled as the seventh Doctor in Doctor Who!

He appeared in a relatively low-key segment on Blue Peter, where he attracted the attention of Bonnie the Blue Peter dog, answered a few questions, confirmed that he’d be on screen the following October, and then promptly popped off again. All in an era when such an announcement didn’t break Twitter!
