Fans of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials will be pleased to hear that the BBC has long-term plans for their upcoming TV adaptation.
The commission of a new drama series based on the epic fantasy trilogy of novels was announced last year by Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One and Polly Hill, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning.

The project is being produced by New Line Cinema and Bad Wolf, the production company recently set up by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner (the former BBC executives responsible for bringing back Doctor Who).
Julie Gardner was executive producer of Doctor Who alongside Russell T Davies throughout Chrisopher Eccleston and David Tennant’s eras.
His Dark Materials executive producer Jane Tranter says that the TV format will allow them to “capture the expansiveness of the story and worlds of Lyra and Will”, confirming plans for the series to run “across many episodes and seasons.”
Philip Pullman added: “In recent years we’ve seen the way that long stories on television, whether adaptations (Game Of Thrones) or original (The Sopranos, The Wire), can reach depths of characterisation and heights of suspense by taking the time for events to make their proper impact and for consequences to unravel.”
Filming is expected to begin in Wales later this year.
