The directorial debut of Ryan Gosling, the movie is currently filming in Detroit and also stars Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes.

Smith told The Telegraph: “[Ryan Gosling is] a really inventive man and he’s got a perverse and bold and bright imagination, and he’s written this tremendous sort of Lynchian piece.”

He reveals that his character is called Bully and is “a sort of bad guy”.

The Doctor Who star teased: “It’s a big departure. It’s always interesting to explore people without emotional boundaries and a lack of remorse.”

How to Catch a Monster is “set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city and centered on a single mother of two being swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town”.

Smith himself has also recently made his directorial debut with Cargese for Sky Arts.

Discussing his future career plans, he commented: “I think I’ll direct a lot of things in that vein. I’d like to direct a science-fiction film, too. [Stanley] Kubrick’s the man to follow: a film in every genre.”
