Jonathan Groff has begun filming on the new series of Doctor Who and here is the first look of him in character in his “mysterious key role” alongside Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson.

The photos of the actors on costume were taken inside Tredegar House in Newport, Wales where the Doctor Who crew are currently filming in the mansion house and gardens through 13 May.

Groff shot to fame when he landed the role of Jessie in musical comedy drama Glee. He is also known for for his Broadway role as King George III in the original production of Hamilton, his on-screen work starring as Eric in the box office hit Knock at the Cabin, playing Holden Ford in the critically acclaimed series Mindhunter, his role as the new Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections and his major voice acting roles in the Frozen films.

“This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding on to our set. So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!,” Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said of Groff’s casting.

“Friend or foe? Human or other? Deadly or delightful?! Coming your way next year, so much fun♥️,” Davies continued on Instagram. “Dress to impress and beware the Duchess ❤️❤️➕[potato emoji] DOCTOR WHO 2024. Does the potato emoji indicate the arrival of Sontarans to disturb a fancy fete? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Doctor Who will return in November 2023 with three 60th anniversary specials starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as companion Donna Noble. In the following festive period, Ncuti Gatwa will star in his first full Doctor Who episode as the Fifteenth Doctor. A new series starring Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson will debut in 2024.
