Pennyworth: Batman’s butler prequel series to shoot in the UK

Pennyworth, the prequel series all about Batman’s British butler, is set to film – rather appropriately – in the UK. Before he butled for the Wayne family, Alfred Pennyworth battled for the British special forces on the streets of London.

Pennyworth will explore this pre-butling time in Alfred’s life, as well as touching upon the early days of the friendship between Thomas Wayne and Alfred.

Early pre-production on the show has begun in the UK, according to the trusted industry website The Knowledge. The site’s report also states that the series is setting up to shoot in the UK, which makes a whole lot of sense considering that’s where Alfred is from.

Warner Horizon Television, the producer of Gotham, is the company behind this new series.  Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, who both work on Gotham, are set to executive produce Pennyworth.

Despite these behind the scenes connections with Gotham, and despite the fact that Sean Pertwee’s Alfred from Gotham has spoken about his time with Thomas Wayne rather a lot in that series, it is not expected that Pennyworth and Gotham directly share a continuity. Pertwee is not expected to return, for one thing, and we’re expecting a storytelling clean slate to allow freedom for the writers.

We’ll keep you posted as Pennyworth develops.
