Supergirl: Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor praised by Michael Rosenbaum

Jon Cryer has debuted in the role of Lex Luthor in The CW’s Supergirl TV series, having previously portrayed Lenny Luthor in the movie Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. One of the first stars to comment on Cryer’s performance is Michael Rosenbaum, who previously played Lex in Smallville…

Rosenbaum, who appeared as Lex Luthor in 154 episodes of Smallville, took to Twitter to praise Cryer’s take on the role thusly:

As well as playing the comedic Lenny character (who was the nephew of Gene Hackman’s Lex in Superman IV), Jon Cryer has built a stellar CV over decades in the entertainment biz: he’s best known for his 262 episodes of Two And A Half Men, with other highlights being Pretty In Pink and Hot Shots!

Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller, who executive produce Supergirl, said this about Cryer’s casting as Lex Luthor in the show:

“We are enormous fans of Jon Cryer, and he was instantly our dream actor to play the iconic role of Lex Luthor. Jon is a super-talent, and the fact that he played Lenny Luthor in Superman IV brings an added layer of legacy to his casting. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Jon to the Supergirl family.”

Lex has been mentioned in the show many times, and it is known that this version of the character had many battles with Superman before being incarcerated.

In Lex’s absence over the years, the show has given us plenty of his relatives: Katie McGrath plays his sister, Lena; Brenda Strong plays his mum, Lillian; and Ian Butcher plays his dad, Lionel. We also saw kid versions of Lex and Lena in a flashback episode a few years back, with Aidan Fink and Camille Marty respectively playing the parts.

Jon Cryer’s Lex debuted on Supergirl in the 15th episode of season 4, and it seems like he made a very good first impression.

We’ll bring you more news as we hear it.
