A Supergirl movie has been announced, which will not be connected to the Supergirl TV series on The CW. Oren Uziel, writer of The Cloverfield Paradox and 22 Jump Street, has signed up to pen the script.
Supergirl (real name Kara Zor-El) is the cousin of Superman, who gains the same powers as the Man Of Steel when she too travels to Earth. Helen Slater played the character in a 1984 feature, and Melissa Benoist currently plays her in the Supergirl TV show.
Neither actress will reprise their role here, but reports have suggested that DC Entertainment is looking to match the optimistic tone of the Supergirl TV series. The DC film franchise that began with Man Of Steel is fairly dark and gritty, and this film will be part of an attempt to remedy that.
It’s unclear where this film will sit in the continuity of the other DC films, but let’s not forget that an empty pod was seen in a Kryptonian spaceship during Man Of Steel. Even back then, rumours persisted that the pod had been vacated by Kara. It’s unclear whether Henry Cavill will appear in the Supergirl movie to connect things together.
The powers-that-be at DC and Warner Bros are looking to hire a female director for the project, which sounds like a smart move.
We’ll let you know as we hear more.
