HBO has renewed The Deuce for its third season, which will be the show’s last. The drama about the early days of the porn industry was created by David Simon and George Pelecanos, both of The Wire vintage, and it airs on Sky Atlantic/Now TV here in the UK.
The Deuce has a starry cast including Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco. The first season aired back in 2017, and Collider reports that the creators have had a three-season structure in mind since the very start.
Back when the show began, David Simon said this to Collider, teasing his plans for three seasons:
“Assuming that all the critics in the world don’t come down on our heads and it finds an audience of some sort, it’s planned for two more seasons [after Season 1]. The ensuing season will be in the late ’70s, after these characters have been around, in this world, for about four or five years. And then, the final season we’ve planned for is ‘85/’86, which is when Times Square came crashing down around their heads. That would conclude it.”
It’s nice to know that the creators had this structure planned from the start, and that they’ll be able to see their ideas through to fruition.
The second season of The Deuce has just begun airing, so it is probably safe to expect a September 2019 premiere for the show’s third and final season.
We’ll bring you more news as we hear it.
