The Sarah Jane Adventures actor Tommy Knight has revealed that he’d like to reprise his role as Luke Smith in Doctor Who.
Knight played Sarah Jane’s adopted son in five seasons of The Sarah Jane Adventures, from January 2007 until October 2011. He previously appeared in Doctor Who in 2008’s ‘The Stolen Earth’ and ‘Journey’s End’, then again briefly in ‘The End of Time: Part Two’ in 2010.
Speaking exclusively to CultBox, the Waterloo Road actor commented: “I would love to [return as Luke in Doctor Who]. If the opportunity came up I would grasp it with both hands.”
Russell T Davies revealed last year that Luke would have come out as gay at some point, had The Sarah Jane Adventures continued.
Knight explained: “[Russell T Davies] asked me if I’d be ok with it. I’m very open minded so thought it was a great idea. It would’ve felt very special to play one of the first big gay characters on CBBC if it had happened.”
Asked what he imagines Luke, Clyde and Rani are up to now in 2014, he joked: “Luke would probably have passed Oxford wonderfully and be working with NASA now! Rani would be a journalist – for CultBox maybe, investigating all the shows with aliens in to see if they’re real! Clyde would be… I have literally no idea! Working in a joke shop?!”
Knight is currently appearing alongside his former Sarah Jane Adventures co-star Yasmin Paige in E4’s Glue: “…we hadn’t spoken for about 6 years. There was a lot of catching up!”
