We’ve learned a little bit more about the Watchmen TV show, which Lost‘s Damon Lindelof is making at HBO, thanks to some intriguing set images of cops in yellow masks.
The first one of these images popped up on the show’s Instagram feed last month, showing a lawman with an obscured face alongside an iconic caption:
And now, two new images have been released along similar lines. Here’s one that says, “Masks save lives”:
And here’s another, with a caption that reads, “Hiding in plain sight”:
Why are these cops dressed like this? Are they, perhaps, paying homage to the iconic age of superheroes? Or maybe they’re just protecting their identities to save their loved ones any hassle? We’ll just have to wait and watch to find out more, of course.
All we have in the meantime is this statement from Lindelof, which explains how his new series will be like the New Testament, with the classic Watchmen comics being the Old Testament:
“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago….they will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools to not sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with Watchmen. The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.”
