David Mitchell stars as the reclusive puzzle-setter, John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor who is sucked into the world of a Major Investigations Team.
Updated 16/09/24: With the show landing on Wednesday, September 25th, the BBC have dropped a trailer for Ludwig.
Inviting us to meet our new favourite (accidental) detective, the trailer offers a quick introduction to the series setup. David Mitchell plays John “Ludwig” Taylor, a genius recluse who finds out his twin brother has gone missing and steps into his shoes as police detective in order to solve the mystery.
Speaking about the show, Mitchell has previously said:
“I’m delighted to be working in a genre of television that I have loved ever since, at the age of 10, I started watching the Miss Marple adaptations, starring Joan Hickson, with my parents.
“Sometimes the only thing that can bring the whole family together is murder.”
Ludwig comes from writer Mark Brotherhood (Father Brown) and Big Talk Studios, in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company.
While the show airs weekly on BBC One, the entire six-part series will also be available on iPlayer from Wednesday 25th.

Ludwig – first look at David Mitchell’s new detective series
Back in January, the BBC announced the filming of Ludwig, a new detective show starring David Mitchell.
Now, they’ve released a bunch of pictures for the “case-of-the-week’ crime comedy-drama.”
The show has an interesting premise…
Reclusive puzzle-setter, John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (David Mitchell) sees his life of solitude turned upside down when his identical twin brother, James, disappears without a trace. In a quest to track James down, Ludwig assumes his brother’s identity, but by taking over every aspect of James’s life, Ludwig is forced to confront his own. Unlike Ludwig, James is no hermit; he’s a family man and a highly respected DCI within Cambridge’s busy Major Investigations Team.
These are big shoes to fill for anyone, but for Ludwig playing dad to a ready-made family proves every bit as challenging as tackling the grisliest of crime scenes. However, Ludwig does have one big advantage – his ability to see the world in puzzle form. John may be a master of all things cryptic, but can he crack the biggest puzzle of his life?
The show also stars Anna Maxwell Martin as Lucy Betts-Taylor, John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James.
The cast also includes Dipo Ola as DI Russell Carter, Gerran Howell as DC Simon Evans and Izuka Hoyle as DS Alice Finch.
Plus, Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, Sophie Willan as Holly Pinder and Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler.
Ludwig guest stars
The show has also announced several high-profile guest stars; Derek Jacobi and Felicity Kendal will both appear.
Additionally, we can expect to see Rose Ayling-Ellis, Karl Pilkington, Allan Mustafa, Paul Chahidi and Hammed Animashaun.
The show comes from Big Talk Studios, in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company. It will air on BBC One and the iPlayer this Autumn.
