HBO Max is reported as developing new series Madame X based on the character Madame Xanadu from DC comics
The project is from writer Angela Robinson, who also worked on other HBO series Hung and True Blood. More relevant, perhaps, she also has her own DC Comics series, Web.
Who is Madame X?
There’s a lot of background on wikipedia, but in a nutshell:
Madame Xanadu is Nimue from Arthurian legend. Former lover of Merlin, she imprisoned him, though not before he took away her immortality, leaving her reliant on potions. She later makes a deal with Death…
There’s a lot of comic book history, staring in 1978 (Doorway to Nightmare #1) and there’s plenty of variation to draw from for a series. The character has appeared in TV’s Swamp Thing, played by Jeryll Prescott. In later stories she was a psychic working for a law firm, and we suspect this is where a series might start, though at other times she’s run a magic shop.
From Deadline, we learn the series will have 60 minute episodes, and is another project HBO Max is developing with Bad Robot, alongside a reboot of the Constantine comic books. We don’t expect anything on screens until 2022, and we’ll keep you up to date with developments.
