Get ready for an Upside Down cartoon show.
The streaming service Netflix has announced an animated spinoff for its monster hit Stranger Things. While the show itself is set to end after its fifth season, this animation has received a straight-to-series order.
The as yet untitled series is coming from the Sydney based animation house Flying Bark. Eric Robles will be its showrunner.
There’s no further concrete news on the animated show as yet, and certainly no cast announced. However, we do know that Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers will be the executive producers, along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps and Eric Robles of Flying Bark Productions.
Matt and Ross Duffer say:
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues.”

Meanwhile, the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow comes to the West End in late 2023.
The play is based on an original story by The Duffer Brothers, Kate Trefry and Jack Thorne. While Trefry writes for the show on screen, Thorne has form with bringing a high-profile franchise to the screen, as one of the co-writers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The First Shadow is written by Kate Trefry. Stephen Daldry directs, with co-direction from Justin Martin.
Here’s the description:
Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce just wants to get out as soon as she can. When new student Henry Creel and his family arrive, they find a fresh start isn’t that easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.
Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story — and to the beginning of the end.
