The pair play the title roles in Alice and Steve, a show about a pair of lifelong friends.
While we still haven’t quite forgiven them of cancelling Extraordinary, Disney+ have a good track record in commissioning new shows. The latest goes under the working title of Alice and Steve.
The show comes from writer Sophie Goodhart (Sex Education, Rivals) and director Tom Kingsley (Stath Lets Flats). It catches our attention thanks to the casting of Nicola Walker (Annika) and Jermaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows). While the latter is know for his comedy, we normally find Nicola Walker in more dramatic roles.
Disney+ describe the show as “a sophisticated, will they, won’t they anti-romantic comedy” and the premise certainly intrigues.
Here’s the setup for Alice and Steve:
Lifelong best friends, Alice (Walker) and Steve (Clement), see their world implode when middle-aged Steve starts dating Alice’s twenty-six-year-old daughter Izzy, played by Yali Topol Margalith (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder). Although both are no strangers to chaos and dubious decision-making, their once rock-solid friendship is turned upside down and tested to its limits – threatening their families, futures and everything in between.
Also starring are Joel Fry (Our Flag Means Death), Tyrese Eaton-Dyce (Sherwood) and Marcia Warren (The Crown). Eilidh Fisher (Dope Girls) and Ebony Aboagye (Staged) round out the cast.
Nicola Walker says:
“I’m thrilled to be stepping into the fabulous world of friendship, motherhood, marriage frantic revenge and fierce love that Sophie Goodhart has created, and to be doing it with Jemaine Clement is completely joyful!
Jemaine Clement adds:
“I really relate to Steve – he’s classy, stylish and an all-round good guy – except for when he isn’t. I’m excited to be working with the wonderful Nicola Walker and seeing how Steve and Alice’s relationship descends into absolute chaos”
The six-episode series comes from Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer), one of BBC Studios’ owned production labels. Filming is underway now – we’ll keep you posted on Alice and Steve.
