The show’s second season landed in May 2024, but Outer Range has now been cancelled by the streamer.
According to reports in the press, including at Deadline, Prime Video have cancelled their Sci-fi/Western series Outer Range.
The genre bending show, which began in 2022, starred Josh Brolin as family patriarch Royal Abbot. The story followed his family, fighting for their land in a longstanding feud with a rival family after discovering a bizarre dark void at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness.
The mystery deepened in the second season as Royal and his wife Cecelia (Lili Taylor), endeavoured to keep their family together in the wake of their granddaughter’s disappearance.
The show worked through a behind-the-scenes changes of personnel between seasons, with Charles Murray (Sons of Anarchy) taking over showrunner duties from creator Brian Watkins. The second season also saw Josh Brolin step behind the camera to direct an episode.
With its time travelling mysteries still up in the air, we can only hope that the show’s creators can find some other format to provide some answers!
Outer Range Numbers
Interestingly, Outer Range‘s first seasons spent five weeks in Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series charts. The second has managed three weeks (so far). It appears the expectations for shows to perform quickly remain as high as ever.
