For its third run, the show’s title really spells it out.

Updated 08/09/22: Ahead of its autumn launch, now set for October 6th, HBO Max have delivered a full trailer for Pennyworth Season 3.

In addition to that qualifier of a subtitle, the new season also has a strapline: “Peace, Love and Mind Control”.

Across a fuller two-minute trailer, Season 3 sets out its stall as Patrick Wayne recruits Alfred to deal with the threat of a new psychokinetic drug called “lullaby state”.

With superpowers emerging, there’s a definite shift into a new era which is backed by a swinging 60s soundtrack. That said, there’s still plenty of pleasing one-lines and lots of swagger; with the glimpse of a Beefeater costume, we can only assume Alfred is breaking into the Tower of London!

In the US, the show airs on HBO Max. In the UK, you can find Pennyworth on Starzplay; the channel streams on Apple TV, Rakuten TV and Roku, or is available as an add-on with Prime Video.

Pennyworth – Season 3 teaser and its well-defined new subtitle

Pennyworth, the show following the early life of Batman’s butler Alfred has been granted a really specific subtitle for season 3.

While it seems daft spelt out so clearly, the move may hint at larger leaps towards the Alfred’s destiny. It could also be a pitch to find a wider audience of superhero fans.

As Pennyworth shifts from Epix to HBO Max for season 3, its narrative also employs a five-year temporal shift. The show plays out in an alternate reality where the Nazis won WWII. Previous seasons have dealt with an English civil war but the new run will embrace the 1960s.

The synopsis says:

“Season three of the psychological thriller begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains.”

“Before The Batman – Before Gotham – Before the Butler – There was Alfred.”

Following Alfred’s story, the series chronicles his life before becoming the Wayne family butler. Jack Bannon plays Alfred Pennyworth, with Ben Aldridge as Bruce Wayne.

In addition, Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler stars Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater, and Simon Manyonda.
