Nick Fury has been absent from the MCU for a long time – Secret Invasion tells us why.
Secret Invasion is one of the next Marvel Cinematic Universe television series in the pipeline.
Nick Fury has been out of the limelight for a while, but the show will feature Samuel L Jackson’s character in a central role. Filming began back in autumn 2021 and it is another six-part series.
Adapting a popular Marvel comics storyline, the story is expected to reveal various characters replaced by the shape changing Skrulls. Rather than a massive inter-MCU event, Marvel head-honcho Kevin Feige has suggested the show will explore the more paranoid political nature of the comics with great twists and turns.
As the trailer shows, Secret Invasion has pulled together an impressive cast. Numerous MCU stars reprise their roles, alongside some seriously big high-profile names. It begins with fan favourite Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), who has summoned her old boss back to Earth…
“You’re in no shape for this fight that lies before us.”
With explosions and plenty of sneaking around, we spotted Don Cheadle’s Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes (aka War Machine) and Martin Freeman’s CIA operative Everett K. Ross. Plus, there’s Ben Mendelsohn as Talos too. Across the six episodes, we’re imagining there might be a guest-of-the-week style approach.
New faces
The two enormous pieces of casting for the show have to be Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman.
While their roles are a mystery, joining the MCU is a big deal for Clarke and she’s taken to social media to say as much:
“Jeeeze Louise, Marvel let me into their world…Their world that includes SAMUEL L FREAKING JACKSON! OLIVIA COLEMAN! BEN MENDELSOHN! Can’t believe they let me and my star struckness near this much talent. I also can’t believe I managed to get words out without dissolving into a fangurl. But here we are, and I really think you’re gonna like it..”
Don Cheadle
In related news, Don Cheadle has recently revealed (via Variety) that his original Marvel contract is up. Beginning in 2010’s Iron Man 2, his version of Rhodey appears in six movies, as well in Secret Invasion and the forthcoming Armor Wars television shows. However, it’s not necessarily the end of Rhodey in the MCU:
“Now, it’s just like, if something sounds fun and I’m presented with it, then yeah, let’s go.”
He also gave a hit of what to expect from Secret Invasion:
“This sets up what happens in Armor Wars. In the trailer, you see that he’s gonna confront Nick Fury. He and Fury are gonna go at it throughout this show as far as what they need to do, given what’s happened on this planet at this point.”
“It’s kind of a thriller. It’s a different kind of show than you usually see in the MCU, which is great that we continue to change it up and switch it up. It’s a lot of fun.”
Secret Invasion, directed by Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim, comes to Disney+ in 2023. We’ll doubtless be hearing a lot more about it before then.
