Big Finish continue the adventures of Holmes and Watson by exploring previously untold cases from the Conan Doyle canon.

Audio producers Big Finish have announced direction for their range of Sherlock Holmes stories.

The company have been creating new adventures since 2010, with Nicholas Briggs and Richard Earl as their Holmes and Watson. Now, they’ve announced a new series titled Sherlock Holmes Untold.

The stories will appear as weekly 30-minute episodes, exploring cases referenced in the Conan Doyle canon which have hitherto remained unexplored. The series comes from writer Jonathan Barnes, the writer of multiple series of the detective’s audio adventures.

Joining Briggs and Earl, the cast includes Tim Bentinck as Mycroft, John Banks as Colonel Sebastian Moran and Inspector Lestrade, and Christopher Naylor as Prime Minister Jasper Cranfield. Further guest cast will be announced at a later date.

Sherlock Holmes Untold

England, 1913. The horizon is darkening with the prospect of war when Dr John Watson confronts embattled Prime Minister Jasper Cranfield with evidence of a crime that has been spread over decades.

A sequence of interconnected mysteries, from the fate of a music hall murderer, to a man driven mad by a worm unknown to science, to a bizarre and sinister society which meets in a furniture warehouse – these untold cases hint at something larger.

What is the purpose of the enigmatic organisation which calls itself “The Lighthouse”? How much does the Prime Minister know? Is Sherlock Holmes truly retired? And what final confrontation do they face?

A brand-new series of Sherlock Holmes mysteries by Jonathan Barnes, knitting together the most celebrated unchronicled cases of the Great Detective into his most ambitious adventure yet.

After show discussion

Following each episode, there’ll be an ‘after show’ discussion in the weekly Big Finish Podcast, in which a special panel of Sherlock Holmes devotees will discuss the episode, invite listeners to contribute their thoughts, and talk to members of the creative team.

Nicholas Briggs said:

“This is an entirely new approach for our Sherlock Holmes range. 30-minute, weekly episodes with exciting cliffhangers, and an audio style which is part traditional Holmes and part 1930s movie serial, with Jamie Robertson delivering a music score steeped in melodrama. The game’s afoot!

Writer Jonathan Barnes added:

“I was thrilled to be asked to return to the world of Sherlock Holmes for this very special release. It’s my hope that Sherlock Holmes Untold provides plenty for fans to get their teeth into while also serving as the ideal jumping-on point for new listeners. It’s the fastest-moving, most complex piece of storytelling that this range has ever done. Briggs and Earl have never been better and the guest cast is superb. There’s something for everyone here!”

Sherlock Holmes Untold is available for pre order from Big Finish.

The serialised audio drama is comprised of eight half-hour episodes, released as weekly downloads beginning on Wednesday 1st October 2025. Once all the episodes are out on Wednesday 19th October, the series becomes a complete downloadable box set.
