Also, that Section 31 Emperor Georgiou series is still in the pipeline!
With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the Enterprise-based, Captain Pike-led series spinning out of Discovery, due in May, executive producer Akiva Goldsman has confirmed a key character’s familial connection.
Christina Chong is playing La’an Noonien-Singh and, at the show’s recent Television Critics Association virtual panel, Goldsman addressed that surname saying:
“She’s related to Khan, for sure, and, uh, and the deal will unfold…”
“We don’t want to bring folks into the show to be splashy. We want to dig deeply into characters that are part of our ensemble and then, obviously, we’re open to getting our arms … but right now, what you see is what you get.”
Khan!
To be honest if they hadn’t been related it would have been surprising. Strange New Worlds is only set a matter of years before Kirk’s five-year mission and genetically engineered superhuman Khan Noonien Singh (played by the late Ricardo Montalbán), a tyrant and key player in the ‘Eugenics Wars’, cropped up in the Original Series’ first season.
Of course, he went on to be the principal villain of The Wrath of Khan too, Kirk and co’s much-loved second big screen outing.
Christina Chong is a familiar British television face; she’s starred in Line of Duty, Bulletproof and Doctor Who.
Paramount+ are putting plenty of faith in Strange New Worlds – it’s already been commissioned for a second series. They’ve also just released a smart new poster for the show:
Of course, UK fans are still waiting on the launch of Paramount+ this side of the pond. Hopefully soon!
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
It also transpires that early work has begun on a Starfleet Academy series; Absentia co-creator Gaia Violo is currently working on a take for the project. It’s long been mooted as an idea and plans were developed for a movie to follow Star Trek V, following younger versions of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. during their studies. Equally, the Enterprise-D visited Wesley Crusher there and there was a 90s PC of the same name.
Additionally, Deadline also report that the promised Discovery spin-off Section 31 is still in the offing. It’s due to follow the exploits of Michelle Yeoh’s mirror universe Emperor Philipa Georgiou – last seen in Discovery‘s Season 3.
It’s a busy old time for the Trek-verse with recommissions and new shows. We’ll endeavour to keep you posted!
