The Rogue One prequel series is bringing back familiar faces for its second (and final) season.
We’ve long known that Star Wars: Andor is a limited affair, with the show’s second season crafted to feed into the Episode IV prequel movie Rogue One.
The story follows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, the pilot destined to accompany Jyn Erso on her ill-fated mission to secure the Death Star plans. Season one saw the start of Cassian’s journey from a smuggler to a committed member of the fledgling Rebel Alliance.
With that first 12-episode run in the rear view, and season two in the can, details have remained scant. However, the director of the show’s final block, remembering that Andor favours three-episode storytelling chunks, has shed light on who participates in that continuity synching finale.
Director Alonso Ruizpalacios (Outer Range), who’s helmed that final block, has given an interview to The Playlist. In it, he mentions working with actors Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker, and Ben Mendelsohn.
While the former is no surprise – Skarsgård plays the rebel fixer Luthen Rael – it’s confirmation for Forest Whitaker’s return as Saw Gerrera too.
Director Krennic
However, what’s most interesting is the apparent return of Ben Mendelsohn to the Star Wars universe. He played the villainous Orson Krennic in Rogue One, the Imperial weapons director in charge of the Death Star construction project. It may just be a fleeting cameo though, as we understand he was only recently engaged for the project.
Given the series’ placement, we also expect Cassian to hook up with his droid co-pilot K-2SO, played by Alan Tudyk. That’s in addition to continuing the rebel storylines of Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay) and Cinta Kaz (Varada Sethu).
We’re still waiting on confirmation of a date for Andor season two. It’s likely to be either late-2024 or early 2025 – we’ll keep you posted.
