Go behind the scenes of The First Shadow as a new documentary film looks at the stage play’s creation. 

With the final series of Stranger Things coming at the end of the year, Netflix are keen for us to remember that the show’s prequel stage play is running on both sides of the Atlantic.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow debuted in London at the Phoenix Theatre in December 2023 and is still running there. It scored a number of awards, including the 2024 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play.

The show also opened on Broadway in April 2025 too. There, the production at the Marquis Theatre has scooped a number of Tony nominations and wins.

Now, Netflix have released a documentary which goes behind the scenes of the Broadway production.

The documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the stage play, unveiling the creative process, challenges, and triumphs of bringing this ambitious theatrical production to life. Through interviews with the show’s creators, including Kate Trefry, Matt and Ross Duffer, and Jack Thorne, as well as the cast and crew, viewers will learn about the care that went into crafting a new story that extends with the extraordinary world of Stranger Things.
