Created and written by Rapman, the show stars Doctor Who’s Tosin Cole.
Could the UK be getting the superhero bug? Disney+’s terrific superpowered flat share sitcom Extraordinary recently landed its second season, with the first also available on itvx. Now, we can look forward to something a bit more intense too with Supacell in June.
The series, set in South London, is billed as a “grounded superhero show”. It comes from Andrew Onwubolu, aka Rapman, the writer/director of 2019’s Blue Story.
Here’s the synopsis for Supacell:
Netflix’s Supacell is about a group of five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. They have little in common except for one thing: they are all Black South Londoners. It is down to one man, Michael Lasaki, to bring them all together in order to save the woman he loves.
Taking the lead role is Tosin Cole, best known for his role as Ryan Sinclair alongside Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who. Since he left the TARDIS in 2021, he took on the lead role of Moses Johnson in 61st Street and also appeared in the recent biopic Bob Marley: One Love.
Joining Cole in Supacell are Nadine Mills as Sabrina, Eric Kofi Abrefa as Andre, Calvin Demba as Rodney, Josh Tedeku as Tazer, Adelayo Adedayo (The Responder) as Dionne, Rayxia Ojo as Sharleen and Giacomo Mancini as Spud.
Supacell streams on Netflix this June.
