The Boys finale explained by showrunner Eric Kripke

Eric Kripke, showrunner of Amazon’s gritty-but-fun superhero series The Boys, has been chatting about the ending of the show’s first season…

The Boys season finale ends with the reveal that Butcher’s wife Becca is still alive, as is the baby she conceived while being raped by Homelander. This is a change from the comics, where Becca and the child both die during childbirth.

Speaking to Collider, Kripke said this about the reveal: “You have this kid who’s half human and half monster; half the person Butcher loves most in the world and half the person Butcher hates most in the world. That’s just too perfect a character to not keep alive.”

The fact that Butcher’s wife is still alive also sets up some interesting dynamics for the show’s second season, namely the fact that Butcher and Hughie now don’t have as much in common – losing a loved one to a Supe – as they previously thought.

Kripke said this about the move: “Is there a way that we can still honor the comic but then pull the rug out to say they don’t have the same backstory at all, they just thought they did? And if we could throw a left hook like that, we could really shock readers of the comic but also present this notion of, though these characters have so much in common, suddenly they find themselves in two different spaces. What does that do to them heading into season 2?”

As for what happens in The Boys season 2, we sure look forward to finding out…
