Sarah Michelle Gellar took to social media to announce her new co-star.
Work is progressing on the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer project – be it revival, reboot or sequel series (makers Hulu currently catchily refer to it as the “Untitled Buffyverse Pilot”).
Regardless of the name, we know it will star Sarah Michelle Gellar who is also an executive producer. In that capacity, she has revealed a key piece of casting. The role of the new Buffyverse slayer has gone to Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
Best known for her recent role on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the 15-year-old actor also has credits on Netflix’s Anne with an E and American Horror Story: Red Tide. Plus, she’s appeared in films such as The Tomorrow War, Black Widow and It: Chapter Two.
The moment Armstrong learned she had won the was captured on Instagram…

In her statement, Sarah Michelle Gellar said:
“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
Writers and executive producers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman added:
“We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”
New Sunnydale
While we still know next to nothing of the pilot’s plans, Gellar does welcome her co-star to “New Sunnydale” which could be the setting for the new story. Especially given the fate of Sunnydale in the BtVS finale (it became a crater!)
We’ll keep you posted on the new Buffyverse show.
