But will the whole Scooby Gang be getting back together?

Updated 07/02/25: Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms her involvement.

Earlier this week, the Buffyverse was rocked by the news that a follow-up to Buffy the Vampire Slayer was going ahead. Yes, we’ve had continuations of the story in other media, but this promises a revival series with the involvement of the show’s star, Buffy Summers herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Now, Ms Gellar has taken to social media to tell the story herself. In the post, she talks about that fact that she “… didn’t see a way for the show to exist again,” but had been persuaded by producer Gail Berman to sit down with director Chloé Zhao and “hear her take” three years ago.

Those conversations continued, adding in writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman until they finally hit on an idea. However, Gellar cautions “I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right.”

Naturally, we’ll keep you posted on the Buffy revival.

Buffy revival in the works with Sarah Michelle Gellar poised to return

Rumours of a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer television project have been swirling for a few years.

The original show, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar in the title role and made a sizeable impact on fan culture.

The story followed Buffy Summers, our generation’s Slayer whose hometown of Sunnydale sat atop a hellmouth. Gathering a gang of friends around her, and with wise council from her Watcher Giles, Buffy battled vampires, demons and other threats while also coping with teenage life.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer itself ran from ran from 1997 – 1993 and also spawned Angel, a spin-off which shifted the action to Los Angeles and followed Buffy’s sometime demon lover, played by David Boreanaz.

That all wrapped up in 2004, but the Buffyverse has remained popular and continued in comic book form. As recently as last year, some members of the cast reunited for an audio drama.

Now, news has broken via Deadline of a new Buffy revival television project.

At one point, there was talk of a version from Monica Owusu-Breen, with original creator Joss Whedon taking an executive producer role. The situation has moved on since then, particularly in the wake of a bunch of very public misconduct allegations surrounding Whedon in 2021, but this appears to be something different.

The new pilot, now in the works, comes from writers Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face). Oscar winning Nomadland director Chloé Zhao – a self-confessed lifelong Buffy fan – is onboard to direct. Presumably, this is the project that Dolly Parton, who’s company co-produced the original 1992 movie, spoke about last year.

The new pilot is framed as a continuation rather than a reboot, with reports suggesting that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in negotiations to reprise her role. However, the show will focus on a new slayer.

Presumably, this leaves the door open to other cast members such as Alyson Hannigan, James Marsters, Nicholas Brendon and Anthony Stewart Head making a return too.

We’ll keep you posted on the Buffy revival.

In the meantime, you can find all 7 seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, plus all 5 seasons of Angel on Disney+.
