The literary adaptation stars Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston.
With its continued rush of novel adaptations, Apple TV+ have revealed the trailer for their next high-profile show. Starring Homeland‘s Claire Danes and everyone’s favourite god of mischief Tom Hiddleston, The Essex Serpent brings the story of a mythical monster to the small village of Aldwinter.
Based on Sarah Perry’s bestselling novel, Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) has adapted the story has adapted for television.
Here’s the premise:
The Essex Serpent follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms a surprising bond of science and scepticism with the local pastor (Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.
Joining Danes and Hiddleston, the main cast is rounded out by Clémence Poésy (The Tunnel), Hayley Squires (Great Expectations), Frank Dillane and Jamael Westman.
Set against some impressively bleak vistas, that all looks very intense and emotional… and scary. Top marks for Claire Danes’ English accent too!
Clio Barnard (The Selfish Giant, Ali & Ava) directs the show, and executive produces with Anna Symon. The other executive producers are Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Patrick Walters. See-Saw Films (Slow Horses) produce for Apple TV+.
The Essex Serpent plays out across 6 hour-long episodes. The first two land on the 13th of May, with subsequent instalments on Fridays until the 10th of June.
