Filming has started on The Girl Before, a new drama for HBO Max and BBC One starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo
It’s widely reported (including The Knowledge) filming has started on The Girl Before. It’s a four-part limited series adapted by JP Delaney from his book of the same name.
What is The Girl Before?
It tells the story of Jane (Mbatha-Raw), who gets the chance to move into a beautiful, ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect (Oyelowo). The catch: occupants have to abide by his list of specific rules.
Jane starts to feel the house changing her in unexpected ways, but when she makes the shocking discovery about her predecessor, she’s forced to confront unnerving similarities. As the two women’s timelines interweave, Jane begins to question if her fate will be the same as the girl before…
Delaney writes, and exec produces, alongside co-writer Marissa Lestrade who worked on episodes 2 and 3. Lisa Brühlmann directs. Mbatha-Raw is an associate producer, her first time in the role.
Where have I seen Gugu Mbatha-Raw before?
Mbatha-Raw was born in England and has had various role including Martha Jones’s sister Tish in Doctor Who, Belle, Black Mirror and Beauty and the Beast. She’s one of the three leads (all of whom are excellent) in Fast Color, an excellent film available on Netflix (and possibly being adapted for an Amazon series). If you’ve not seen it, we recommend it as well worth a watch.
We look forward to seeing her in this new project and will keep you up to date on progress.
