Season 2 of HBO’s space liner bound comedy Avenue 5 has been a long time coming.
The show, which stars Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad, comes from Armando Iannucci (Veep, The Thick of It) and dropped its first season back in early 2020. Understandably, the second run has taken a while… the world’s been a bit nuts since then!
Set primarily aboard the Avenue 5, some forty years into the future, space travel is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. However, when the interplanetary cruise ship goes off course due to an accident, the crew and passengers have to adjust to their new and terrifying predicament…
“The twilight of the moron tyrant is upon us!”
With a new solar peril, on top of all their other problems, the new run looks even more anarchic than before. We’re looking forward to more of the scene stealing Rebecca Front – who appears to be getting married – and Leonora Critchlow’s engineer smart and outspoken Billie.
Alongside Laurie and Gad, Front and Critchlow, Season 2 returnees include Zach Woods, Suzy Nakamura, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Ethan Phillips.
The trailer also showcases Lucy Punch (Motherland) as a talk show host with Daily May Cooper (This Country) playing her bereaved guest. Other announced guest stars for season 2 include Andy Buckley, Jessica St. Clair, Kyle Bornheimer, Adam Pålsson, Leila Farzad, Jonathan Aris, and Arsher Ali.
Future plans?
Unfortunately, if Deadline‘s May news report is to be believed, this may also be Avenue 5’s last season. With delays brought on by the pandemic, we read that cast members options have now expired. It’s a similar situation to Hulu/Disney+’s The Orville. However, if the reaction to the show is successful we’re sure there will be a way!
Avenue 5 airs on HBO in the US and on Sky Comedy in the UK. We don’t have confirmation of the UK start date for season 2 yet – we’ll keep you posted.
