Dr Max Lieberman and Detective Inspector Oscar Rheinhardt will return for three further stories.
Vienna Blood, created by Steve Thompson (Doctor Who, Sherlock) and based on the Liebermann Papers stories by Frank Tallis, is returning for a second season.
The show sees a brilliant young doctor Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard) teamed with Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt (Juergen Maurer) to investigate unusual and disturbing crimes.
Set in 1900s Vienna, the city’s grand cafes and opera houses provide the locations for a heady mix of philosophy, science and art, where a clash of cultures and ideas play out. As a Freudian student, Max brings his skills of perception and psychology to bear in the form of early criminal profiling. This pairs with Oskar’s forceful tenacity and leads them to solve some of Vienna’s most mysterious and deadly cases.
We read that the new episodes are titled The Melancholy Countess, The Devil’s Kiss and Darkness Rising – the latter of which shares a title with the fourth Lieberman Papers book.
In addition to Beard (Dracula, The Imitation Game) and Maurer, the cast also includes Conleth Hill (Game Of Thrones), Charlene McKenna (Bloodlands, Peaky Blinders), Amelia Bullmore (Gentleman Jack) and Luise von Finckh.
For this second series, Lucy Griffiths (Robin Hood, True Blood) is taking on the role of Amelia Lydgate, previously played by Jessica De Gouw.
Vienna
The show filmed on location in Vienna and in England. It’s directed by Robert Dornhelm, produced by Hilary Bevan Jones and Jez Swimer for Endor Productions and Andreas Kamm and Oliver Auspitz for MR Film. Executive Producers are Steve Thompson, Klaus Lintschinger (ORF), Wolfgang Feindt (ZDF) and Carlo Dusi and Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia (Red Arrow Studios International).
Hilary Bevan Jones, Managing Director of Endor Productions, commented:
“To have had the pleasure of filming in the magical city of Vienna for a second series was such a treat, a real feast for the eyes, not only for us as programme makers but – we hope – for our viewers too.
We have three more compelling stories written by the incredible Steve Thompson and once again inspired by the world Frank Tallis created in his Liebermann novels. With Matthew Beard and Juergen Maurer heading our fantastic international cast and Robert Dornhelm weaving his directorial vision we have been spoiled.
We look forward to revisiting the love and warmth of the Liebermann family and new adventures with our duo Max and Oskar.”
