The show swaps its submarine setting for a weapons testing site and the closed ranks of the RAF.
After its highly successful first series in 2021, Tom Edge’s Vigil was an unsurprising recommission for the BBC. In addition to attracting over 13 million viewers for its launch, it scooped up an international Emmy and a Bafta nomination for Best Drama Series.
Now, the show is back and swapping the claustrophobic confines of a submarine for a weapons testing site; the new storyline takes place in both Scotland and the Middle East.
Here’s the premise for Vigil Series 2:
In a brand-new investigation, Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) look to the skies as they enter the secret world of drone warfare to catch a killer.
Following multiple deaths at a Scottish weapons test, Silva and Longacre are tasked with finding out the cause. Entering the closed ranks of the air force in Scotland and the Middle East, the pair face the deadly warfare of tomorrow as they fight for their own uncertain future.
Joining Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie, Gary Lewis returns as DSU Robertson.
New cast members for series two include Romola Garai, Dougray Scott, Amir El-Masry, David Elliot, Chris Jenks, Tommy Sim’aan, Oscar Salem and Jonathan Ajayi. Plus, Hiba Medina in her first major TV role.
Vigil Series 2 comes from World Productions, an ITV Studios company. It is written and created by Tom Edge, with episodes by Maryam Hamidi, James Smythe and Ryan O’Sullivan and Matilda Wnek.
The directors are Andy De Emmony (The Last Kingdom) and Josh Agnew (Outlander). The producer is Marcus Wilson and associate producer is George Aza-Selinger. Executive producers are Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, and Tom Edge.
The six-part series will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year.
You can still catch up with the first series of the show on the iPlayer.
