Young Royals is a Swedish coming of age boarding school drama centred on Prince Wilhelm who just wants to be ordinary — the teaser trailer is out now
Arriving on Netflix on July 1, Young Royals looks set to capitalise on the interest in royalty already served by The Crown a perennial fixture of the Nielsens. The synopsis is:
When Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) arrives at the prestigious boarding school Hillerska he finally gets an opportunity to explore his true self and find out what kind of life he really wants. Wilhelm starts dreaming of a future filled with freedom and unconditional love far away from the royal obligations — but when he unexpectedly becomes next in line for the throne his dilemma is heightened as he has to make a choice. Love or duty…
We’ve seen variation of this plot many times (Coming to America springs to mind, and elements of Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper, though not as far as the 1968 film Up The Junction, or Pulp’s Common People). Back to Young Royals…
Apart from Edvin Ryding (Gåsmamman, Miss Friman’s War), the cast includes Pernilla August (The Investigation, The Legacy), who protrays Wilhelm’s mother, Queen Kristina. Playing his classmates are Malte Gårdinger (The Sandhamn Murders), Frida Argento (Astrid), newcomer Nikita Uggla, and Omar Rudberg, who makes his acting debut.
You can catch the official teaser trailer for Young Royals now, and catch the series on July 1 on Netflix.
