Welcome to the CultBox Podcast roundup for August 2021
Our favourites this month have included…
14 for 14 (The Doctor Who Show Presents…)
The ever-entertaining Australian podcast The Doctor Who Show, with its genial hosts Rob and Dave, presents a special episode in reaction to the (not so shocking) revelation that Jodie Whittaker is set to depart the role in 2022. The pair come up with a number of interesting picks for her replacement, as well as a couple of rather unlikely ones too!
While we’re at it, consider this a fulsome recommendation for their regular monthly episodes as well as the terrific mini-eps The List Makers and Primary Sources. While the former is pretty much self-explanatory, the latter features letters from genre publications of the 1980s and 90s, proking interesting reflections on the state of Doctor Who fandom both then and now.
Full Disclosure with James O’Brien S2, Ep58 – Anthony Horowitz
In the latest episode of his interview series, James talks to Anthony Horowitz about his latest novel A Line To Kill. On the way, the discussion covers his childhood and career, with mentions of Robin of Sherwood, Foyle’s War, Alex Rider and James Bond. Sadly, there’s no mention of Crime Traveller though!
Who Am I This Time S2, Ep 11 – David Warner
David Morrissey talks to the aimable cult icon David Warner about his role as Keith Jennings in The Omen. The chat also takes in his career highlights, working for the RSC and battling stage fright. There’s even a brief mention of the Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and some wry amusement at what American screenwriters think British people might be named.
Real Dictators Season 2 with Paul McGann
Paul McGann rounds out the second series of Real Dictators as he finishes the story of Libya’s Colonel Gaddafi. While the series is off, there’s already another McGann fronted series from Noiser Podcasts in progress: Short History Of… uses the same entertaining format to look at great moments in history. So far, episodes have covered such diverse topics as Roman Gladiators, The Cuban Missile Crisis, Blackbeard the Pirate and The California Gold Rush.
Film Stories with Simon Brew
After a short break, Film Stories with Simon Brew returned mid-month with a look at Spielberg’s Ready Player One, Working Girl, The Departed, La La Land, Costner’s Open Range and Top Secret! As ever, all had compelling behind-the-scenes stories on their way to the big screen.
And finally: From Queer to Eternity – Live Event
While From Queer To Eternity may have finished its first season, there’s still a special live podcast to come as part of the London Podcast Festival. The recording takes place on Tuesday 9th September, with Scott Handcock interviewing special guest Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who, Sherlock, The League of Gentlemen).
Happy listening!
